POST-TRANSITION STATUS AND SELECTED CHALLENGES OF THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM OF SERBIA

This paper discusses the position of the healthcare system of the Republic of Serbia in the post-transitional period, in the context of the challenges and sustainability. Some of the most important problems that the healthcare system faces, including financial aspects, demography, corruption, public health, environmental protection, etc., are selected and discussed. Developmental potentials of the healthcare system were also noted, as well as the possibility of developing medical research. Socioeconomic factors have been analyzed to determine the relationship between costs and quality of life of the inhabitants of Serbia. The paper concludes that the entre healthcare system requires more efficient optimization (especially the financial sector and resource optimization) as well as the necessity of a higher level of intersectoral connectivity.
